Foodborne Illness

Representing the Victims of Foodborne Illness

When people visit a restaurant or attend a public event, they trust that the food available will meet standards mandated by federal and California state regulations. Unfortunately, all too often, they fall victim to food poisoning and other foodborne illness.

The majority of foodborne illness affects people only for a short time. However, some illnesses last longer and are more serious; this is especially true with young children and the elderly in which foodborne illness can lead to high fevers, brain damage, respiratory arrest and even death.

At the Ellis Law Corporation, we understand that a foodborne illness can be a life-changing event. We represent the victims of foodborne illness and their families, holding food providers accountable for the harm they cause.

Common Foodborne Illnesses

Recent news stories have raised the awareness of one type of foodborne illness: Escherichia coli (E. coli) infection. E. coli can be responsible for more serious conditions such as peritonitis (inflammation of the lining of the abdominal cavity) and septicemia (blood poisoning). The conditions require medical treatment. If the food poisoning is the result of negligence, our lawyers may be able to recover your medical costs to help you get back on track.

Food poisoning can be the result of other microorganisms as well. Clostridium botulinum causes a severe foodborne illness called botulism, and the Salmonella bacterium is responsible for salmonella poisoning. Other harmful microorganisms that may sicken people include Shigella, Campylobacter and the Norwalk virus.

Causes of Foodborne Illnesses

Improper food handling procedures, food preparation techniques and food storage procedures are responsible for a large portion of food poisoning incidents, as well as improper food processing techniques at large factories.

By working with the lawyers at our Los Angeles area law firm, we may be able to prove that these improper techniques are negligent, and that your medical costs and associated expenses are recoverable.
